Customer Review: Nice idea, so-so results

I love Nordic Ware pans and I often choose this brand. I also like the Kaiser line from Germany too.
I have bought a few of these pans, such as the palace, castle, and train.
You have to use a good flour-oil spray, such as Baker's Joy, maybe even more than recommended in the little nooks and crannies. This helps with inverting the pan as well as getting the best detail possible.
I have yet to get the results shown in the picture even with effort so I have to wonder about it. The cakes did resemble the picture on the label, but had a more melted candle look to them. If you're just trying to impress kids, this would probably be okay.
Allow for more than ample time for the cakes to cool before inverting them.
"Fancy" or smooth type batters do not seem compatible with this design. I wouldn't use a store-bought cake mix. It seems to need some texture for the design and to get the cakes out in one piece. Pumpkin or nut bread recipes seem to work. A true shortcake recipe works well.
